News this week about the High Court independent findings from High Court Associate’s allegations of sexual harassment by former High Court Judge Dyson Hayden (who has denied these allegations) has brought to the fore and into the open, legal culture, legal hierarchy, legal leadership, the standards of behaviour, words, often accepted or walked past in law, as many remain silent, as ‘victims’ perpetrators or those that stay on the sidelines and watch, tight lipped (3 police officers in George Floyd incident)
Lets broaden the discussion to include bullying, harassment, discrimination and targeting of queen bees as these too form part of the dehumanising behaviour in law. Louise poses questions to ‘victims’, perpetrators and those that watch these behaviours from the sidelines , in silence.
The Associates have provided a wonderful example of courage, the High Court has provided an exemplary leadership model. This is a time for change, a change of accepted behaviour to that of excellence, respect and dignity in all interactions.
Its no longer enough to have a brilliant legal mind, more is required. An exemplary human role model, where effective leadership skills are seen as mandatory to increase the reputation of law and lawyers, and improve the performance of lawyers, which will improve the health, productivity, and influence of many and the culture in law – safety must be accepted as the foundation for high performance.
A call to action to all leaders, all in law need you to be courageous, humble (ask for help), compassionate, empathetic, vulnerable, respectful, dignify others, and live with humanity in addition to legal acumen! You can do it! Louise is a holistic barrister, an advanced trained mediator, certified high performance coach and consultant (CHPC) and emotional intelligence coach.
