When You Are Criticised: What Is Your Attitude?

The sad news of Judge Guy Andrew suicide in Qld this week, brought me to tears.... mental health and suicide are close to my heart.... personally and professionally. I suffered with depression from 8 years of age to my early 30's at which time I attempted suicide twice. I empathise and understand mental health issues and suicide, I also understand that we can build up resilience, improve mental health and people can live with greater confidence. We can all show up as our best, with a healthy attitude, even when criticised. You probably know, I strongly advocate for law and lawyers highly valuing humanness and building human qualities, managing emotions, being your best self in law, looking after your wellbeing and others, which given the same focus the same as technicality., so that performance is continually improved We have a shared experiences as humans in legal practice. Criticism No one likes to be criticised, its not enjoyable, however it's a fact of life, … [Read more...]

You Can Climb Out Of Hardship & Uncertainty With Skill!

With the current climate and challenges that this year has bought, many people and businesses are searching for effective tools to help them manage, adapt, grow, be profitable, successful and happier and in the process get ahead of the competition as they climb out of this year. They get coached, have a business consultant come in to their business to improve performance and culture, or develop and skill up and ready themselves for the future. They start something meaningful........ When it comes to leadership and business, a study of over 200 of the top CEO's was performed and it found that EQ was twice as important as IQ and technical ability in driving performance. It accounted for a 90% difference between the best and the rest. [https://youtu.be/WICq_Pj8ZUk] Its not the smartest people who are the most successful or fulfilled in life. IQ will help get entry to law school/professions, clerkships and professional jobs. IQ and technical ability won't help manage stress, build … [Read more...]

Essential Conflict Resolution, Leadership & Life Skill: INFLUENCE

When was the last time you spoke to your 6 year old asking them to brush their teeth before bed, go back to bed, hurry up and get ready for school, without success? Think about a time you spoke with your spouse/partner/friend/family and you wanted them to agree with you on a topic, without success? Think about the last time you attended a mediation, when you spoke (or observed others speak) at the opening, when the other side was informed of the strength of your case, their case was diminished [and they need a better handle on the law]. You may have been surprised they didn't 'come to their senses'. :-) Getting others to agree with you , having satisfying relationships, asking others to comply when we ask for help or when trying to alter others behaviour or thinking, sell our services or ideas or be an effective leader.... ALL require high levels of influence. Many people think influence involves force . It is, however, a skill, it takes time, effort and intention to … [Read more...]

Lawyers Are Taught To Dehumanise! Lets Be Exemplary Human Role Models

Summary: Summary: Lawyers are taught to dehumanise from law school, where emotions and human skills are devalued and dismissed, thought of as unnecessary in practice and technicality seen as the only skill required for greatness (of course technicality is necessary). A high standard of humanity is required to be great people, leaders, role models in the world and in law. Our staff, clients, colleagues, counterparts, families, friends are depending on us to show up as our best selves in practice to serve them with excellence. . Lawyer's aren't literally killing people at work through dehumanisation, however, lawyers may be dehumanising others and not even know they are doing it! This vlog provides 3 vital skills to ensure you get on the ramp or road to role model greatness as they will begin the path for greater humanity in law. We are all humans with responsibilities and accountability to other humans and therefore can't act like the 3 Police officers who stood … [Read more...]
